By far the first step is to establish a staging area in your home. It is best to find the biggest room of the house and use it as the holding place as you pack.

Next make sure you have your rental truck or a portable storage container reserved. Most large cities have several companies that offer portable storage containers. A few of the companies are PODS (Portable On Demand Storage), MobileMini, UPack (ReloCube), and 1-800-PackRat. Even if you have a portable storage container you will not want to start filling it until your staging area has started to fill up.


Make sure you have a plan for loading your moving truck or portable storage container, the last thing you want to do is have to unload your container because you did not plan for a large item. As a rule it is best to put the largest items in the back, and the heavyest items on the bottom. Think layers when loading your moving container. As well think about what needs to come out of the moving truck or portable storage container first. Those items you will want to put in last if you will need access to special items as soon as you arrive to your new home.

If your moving date is a few months away and you still want to be able to live in your home without clutter then you will want to have either a storage area or a pod delivered to your home. Pods are a great tool if you want to keep your sanity while moving. The moving Pod is delivered to your home and is set down in either your driveway or on the street in front of your home. Once you have filled your pod the pod is picked up and brought to either your new home or to a storage facility.

Don’t forget to order the boxes for your move

If you are planning a move in advance make sure to start collecting boxes from your local grocery store. If you don’t mind spending the money buying boxes for your move is a real time saver. Just make sure you shop around. There are plenty of stores that sell large moving boxes so take the time to make a few calls. Generally your local U-Haul or Ryder truck store will have all just about every type of box you could need, and they are at a reasonable price. Remember to look into boxes for the close hanging in your closet. They are at a premium, but if you have the extra space they can make the unpacking process so much easier. Finally don’t forget the tape.
